I have been a motorcyclist since 1967, and have been teaching rider courses at the Madison Area Technical College since 1989. In 1994 I was certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation as a Chief Instructor (now called a “RiderCoach Trainer”). A “Chief” trains new instructors (now “RiderCoaches”) for the Wisconsin Motorcycle Safety Program (WMSP) of the state Department of Transportation and also reviews rider training sites for the department throughout Wisconsin. I have taught “Experienced RiderCourses” throughout the United States for a national motorcycle association. I spend the winters in Arizona so I can ride motorcycles year-‘round. I teach rider courses in Tucson and train new “RiderCoaches” for TEAM Arizona. I became interested in motorcycles while a student at Lawrence College, in Appleton, where I spotted a fellow student riding around campus on an elegant, quiet, shaft-drive motorcycle unlike any motorcycle I had previously seen. I learned what it was later when I was a graduate student at Yale University and came across a motorcycle dealership selling this motorcycle, a BMW. In 1967, when I finally could afford a motorcycle, I bought my first of many. Today I ride modern touring motorcycles and have ridden them throughout the U.S. and Canada. However, I especially treasure my collection of vintage BMWs, which I ride locally whenever the weather permits. I have several that duplicate my very first motorcycle, and another one that dates to 1939. My personal website is “http://bmwdean.home.att.net,” and my year-‘round email address is “jeff.dean@att.net.” |
